PURPOSE OF JOB

The Chair of the Education Department furthers the University's mission and vision by supporting academic excellence and fostering a environment where both students and faculty can succeed. The Department prepares educators for elementary and secondary schools, with a specific focus on Maryland and Seventh-Day Adventist school systems. The programs offered provide a broad based liberal arts foundation and practical applications that foster the holistic development of students who are liberally educated and professionally prepared.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Directs the Education Department by providing vision and guidance in harmony with University's mission and strategic plan.
  • Works in harmony with various accrediting bodies in order to maintain or seek appropriate accreditation.
  • Teaches courses, supervises clinical experiences, directs student research, advises students, and engages in scholarly/clinical work in areas of interest.
  • Work collaboratively with constituents (School of Graduate and Professional Studies (SGPS), Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Columbia Union Education Division of the Seventh-day Adventist and state and local early childhood programs.
  • Assists in data collection and report writing for program assessment
  • Serves on program committees within the department and university
  • Provides leadership and service to the university, region, state and national level.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Terminal degree required, Ph.D in Education, Education Administration, Curriculum Development, and/or Educational Leadership preferred.
  • 8-10 years of progressive leadership experience in secondary or tertiary academic setting.
  • Experience with grants and grant writing.
  • Successful fiscal management in a professional setting.
  • Certified or qualified for Maryland Teacher's Certification.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
